OVERVIEW:

Version>02 is a digital arts and technology convergence co-presented by Select Media , OVT and the Museum of Contemporary Art on April 18, 19 and 20 of 2002. For the first iteration of this event we are asking new media producers, artists, musicians, filmmakers, programmers, tactical media provocateurs, designers, information architects, and critical thinkers to comment on the state of the digital commons.

The digital commons is a metaphor for the public space that we use to communicate and distribute ideas, where we share tools and resources, and influences the way we transmit knowledge and art.

The digital commons requires dialogue about intellectual property, the balance between civil liberties and security, freedom of speech and privacy, issues of access and the implications of tool use.

Some herald the internet and the global communications infrastructure as a protected space that allows creativity and innovation to flourish. Others argue that that our civil liberties are at risk and we are entering a society more perfectly monitored and filtered than any in history. Version>02 will focus on the issues that are defining this debate.

Version>02 is a tour through the Digital Commons and offers an opportunity to meet those who tend to the gardens, fences, pathways and investigate the threats and opportunities that the digital commons face. It will feature three evenings of musical performances, a film festival, and a symposia of lectures by guest speakers and panel discussion. The Version>Lab will provide gallery space for artists and performers, as well as an informational space for web installations and demonstrations from some of the best in the emergent digital arts cultures.

A DVD, CD, an issue of Select Magazine, a Version>02 reader and online web gallery will be produced to accompany the event.

Why Version>02

Created to increase the volume of dialogue regarding the intersections of digital arts and technology, Version>02 is a first of its kind in Chicago. Inspired by media arts festivals like Next 5 Minutes and Net.congestion, Ed Marszewski hooked up with Geert Lovink to introduce a similar festival to Chicago. After discussing the idea with project collaborator Brien Rullman of OVT Visuals, the idea was further iterated with Yolanda Cursach and Peter Taub of the MCA. Karl Kuhn, Brian Dressel, Michael Digioia, and Liz Revision joined the conspiracy and the convergence plan emerged. Post 9-11 Version>02 evolved to become a platform to introduce to disparate communities in Chicago the spectrum of ideas, legislation, technologies, strategies and projects that are influencing the future of the digital commons.

Version>02 Coordinators include Yolanda Cursach, Paul B. Davis, Michael Digioia, Brian Dressel, Kathryn Frazier, Jean Kang, Karl Kuhn, Geert Lovink, Doug Lussenhop, Ed Marszewski, Liz Revision, Brien Rullman, and Nato Thompson.
